Ysgol Gynradd St John Lloyd RC Primary School

To be the best we can be, living to learn, learning to live with God at our side.

Welcome

YEAR 3/ 4

Welcome back everyone and I hope you have all had a wonderful Summer break and are looking forward to an exciting time in Year 3/4.

Our first topic this term is ‘Vile Victorians’ and we will be learning about the lives and conditions of the Victorian people.  During the topic we will be looking at a range of artefacts to explore how they lived.  We will be taking part in a Victorian workshop where we will learn lots of interesting facts and have the opportunity to ask lots of relevant questions.  How exciting!  We will also be looking at the art work of William Morris and create our own art work using a repeated pattern.  If you love music you are in for a treat!  We will be composing our own pieces of music from the Victorian period.

Our R.E. topic is ‘Homes’.  Our readings from the Bible will help us to understand how God wants us to live in his family loving others.  This terms virtues are ‘Loving & Compassionate’ which will help us to develop our understanding of the two greatest commandments, to love God and to love one another.

In numeracy we will be looking at number and place value, addition and subtraction and properties of shape.  Please learn and practise your times tables.

Homework

Maths homework will be put online on a Friday and is linked to the work that the children have been doing in class. Your child has their own individual ‘ My Maths’ login password.

New Bug Club books will be issued every Friday and please can you read with your parents every day.

P.E

P.E. will be undertaken on Thursday and you will need to bring your kit in a clearly labelled bag to be kept in school until half term when it will be given back to you to wash.

Note to parents:

Please ensure all of your child’s jumpers, cardigans and any coats have their names in.  We will do our best to ensure they are found when lost, but it becomes difficult if the children’s names are not written inside.

We look forward to a fun and exciting year and not forgetting lots of hard work!!!!!

Information on our class structure and curriculum  at SJL

In line with our prospectus, classes are mixed ability with some year groups being split year groups. In the case where TEACHING classes are based on ability the pupils parent/ guardian will be notified individually and the reasons explained for the grouping.

In Maths pupils are set as this allows the teaching to maximise the development of pupils skills and understanding. Homework is provided through MY MATHS. Please see the attached link for explanation of  how to maximise homework in addition to set weekly HW by class

In literacy classes pupils are mixed ability with spelling groups based on pupils spelling ages and their consistent understanding of spelling rules. The school uses Nelson Spelling. The book colour reflects the expected spelling patterns for that year group;

RED =Y1-2, YELLOW = Y2-3, PURPLE= Y3-4, BLUE= Y4, GREEN = Y5, ORANGE =Y6

Remember SJL has an open door policy and communication between the school and parents is vital to us developing your child's education. If you would like to discuss any issues with the class teacher or pop in for a chat please book a time slot with the secretary
