Information on our class structure and curriculum at SJL

In line with our prospectus, classes are mixed ability with some year groups being split year groups. In the case where TEACHING classes are based on ability the pupils parent/ guardian will be notified individually and the reasons explained for the grouping.

In Maths pupils are set as this allows the teaching to maximise the development of pupils skills and understanding. Homework is provided through MY MATHS. Please see the attached link for explanation of  how to maximise homework in addition to set weekly HW by class 

In literacy classes pupils are mixed ability with spelling groups based on pupils spelling ages and their consistent understanding of spelling rules. The school uses Nelson Spelling. The book colour reflects the expected spelling patterns for that year group;

RED =Y1-2, YELLOW = Y2-3, PURPLE= Y3-4, BLUE= Y4, GREEN = Y5, ORANGE =Y6

Welcome back to another exciting, busy and fun filled term in Year 5/6 Teilo. We have so many wonderful learning opportunities planned for you and lots of visits, visitors and celebrations to look forward to.

This term we will be continuing to develop the four purposes of the new curriculum for Wales:

* Ambitious, capable learners ready to learn throughout their lives

* Enterprising, creative contributors ready to play a full part in life and work

* Ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world

* Healthy, confident individuals ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society

And as usual Mr Sheehan, Miss Lia, Mrs Francis and Mrs Bater will be helping up with all our learning.

We are excited to share with you the wonderful adventures that await us this term as we dive into the topic 'Magic and Mayhem'. This theme is sure to spark the imaginations of our young learners and encourage them to explore fascinating concepts through stories, science, and culture.

This term, we will be reading the enchanting series, Harry Potter, by J.K. Rowling. These magical tales will provide a thrilling backdrop for our discussions and activities. Students will not only enjoy the captivating stories and unforgettable characters but will also have the opportunity to think critically about the events and lessons in the books. Themes such as friendship, bravery, and standing up for what is right will resonate strongly with our students.

As part of our exploration into 'Magic and Mayhem', we will embark on fun investigations involving materials and potions! Students will get hands-on experience as they learn about different substances and how to mix and separate them to create their own magical concoctions. This delightful blend of storytelling and science will help them discover the fascinating properties of materials while encouraging creativity and problem-solving skills.

We will also journey back in time to learn about amazing scientists, focusing on Alexander Fleming, who discovered penicillin. This discovery changed medicine forever! As we uncover Fleming’s story, students will gain an appreciation for the real-world impact of scientific breakthroughs and the importance of determination in overcoming obstacles.

In addition to our literary journey, students will have a chance to create their own potions for a fun 'Potion Market' project! This exciting activity will not only let them unleash their creativity but will also provide an understanding of how to work together as a team. They will learn about making and marketing their potions, which will make for a thrilling entrepreneurial experience.

While we have fun with potions, we will also take time to talk about some of the risks related to dangerous potions, like drugs. Our aim is to ensure that students understand the importance of making safe and healthy choices in their lives, which will help them grow into responsible and informed individuals.

Our RE topic this term is called “Desert to Garden”, and will lead us during this season of Lent to becoming closer to God as we await Holy week and the Resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. Also this term, we will be studying the virtues of attentiveness and discernment and how we can use these qualities to live better lives. Through discussions and reflections, students will learn the importance of being observant, thoughtful, and wise in their choices, in everyday situations.

This term is packed full of engaging lessons and magical moments!
