Year 4

Information on our class structure and curriculum in KS2 at SJL
In line with our prospectus, classes in KS2 are mixed ability with some year groups being split year groups. In the case where TEACHING classes are based on ability the pupils parent/ guardian will be notified individually and the reasons explained for the grouping.

In Maths pupils are set as this allows the teaching to maximise the development of pupils skills and understanding. Homework is provided through MY MATHS. Please see the attached link for explanation of  how to maximise homework in addition to set weekly HW by class

Spring 2

Welcome back! Hope you had a restful half term.

This term our topic is 'Castles & Dragons'. We will be visiting Cardiff Castle to discover this period in Welsh History commonly known as 'The Age of the Princes'. We will be researching Welsh Princes, how Wales was divided up into different provinces and why. Also, we be be finding out about life in Medieval Wales; the food they ate, medicines they used and how they built their homes. In addition, in our Language lessons, we will focus on Welsh Castles, conducting research and presenting our findings as non-chronological reports and wiki pages. So stay tuned!

How about designing your own coat of arms? Get your thinking caps on about images you could include that would reflect your personality.

Please note;

PE - Miss Samuel's class will now be on Fridays.

We are looking forward to an interesting and exciting half term.

Mrs. Lewis and Miss Samuel.

In literacy classes pupils are mixed ability with spelling groups based on pupils spelling ages and their consistent understanding of spelling rules. The school uses Nelson Spelling. The book colour reflects the expected spelling patterns for that year group;
RED =Y1-2, YELLOW = Y2-3, PURPLE= Y3-4, BLUE= Y4, GREEN = Y5, ORANGE =Y6
Remember SJL has an open door policy and communication between the school and parents is vital to us developing your child's education. If you would like to discuss any issues with the class teacher or pop in for a chat please book a time slot with Mrs Chambers.
Spring Term in Year 3/4 Mrs Lewis and Miss Samuel

Our first topic this term is called 'Flight Engineers'. After asking the children for their ideas, we will be making our very own kites! In doing this we will be improving our measuring skills for our maths lessons and finding perimeters. We will also be finding out about the History of flight and researching the Wright Brothers.

In Science we will be looking at forces and find out more about how flying things stay on the air.

Our novel for the term is 'How to train your dragon'. We are sure lots of you have seen the film but wonder how it compares to the book.

Do not forget your Bug Club, My Maths and Spelling homework each week.

It is going to be an exciting term!

WELCOME TO YEAR 3/4 Miss Samuel/ Y4 Mrs Lewis

We really hope you are all looking forward to this year as much as we are. We have so many exciting opportunities and activities planned, which we hope will add to the wonderful memories you’ve built so far at St John Lloyd!

Our topic this term is ‘Wild Wood’ and to start we are going on a class trip to Cosmeston Lake and the surrounding woodlands. Whilst there we will learn about a range of wildlife that can be found there and  measure the circumference and height of trees.  Back in the classroom we have a range of exciting activities e.g. using keys to identify different animals and plants, sorting items collected at the woodland in a Venn diagram, go on a bug hunt and researching information about a famous artist called Andy Goldsworthy who is inspired by all aspects of the natural world e.g. stones, leaves, snowflakes and twigs.

In our Literacy lessons, we will be reading/studying,  'Robin Hood' followed by 'Spiderwick' – Let the battle begin! Our RE topic is ‘People’ and we will be thinking about our Big Question – Where do I come from? In addition to this we will develop our ICT skills with a focus this term on Digital Literacy. We will be considering our behaviour online and how to think critically about shared information. We will also continue to develop our Welsh knowledge and our Maths skills will be posted to this page.

It is very important to complete your homework - Bug Club, My Maths and spelling homework will be set weekly. Alongside this comprehension and research projects will be set too!

We wish you all every success for Year 3 and Year 4 and are really looking forward to working with you all!

Let’s have a great year!
