Welcome to Y6

 WELCOME back to your very last year at St John Lloyd!

It’s the beginning of a brand new year and a brand new term. We’ve got lots of exciting events and challenges ahead of us and hope that everyone of you will enjoy, flourish and excel in Year 6.

This year we will be continuing to develop the four purposes of the new curriculum for Wales:

* Ambitious, capable learners ready to learn throughout their lives

* Enterprising, creative contributors ready to play a full part in life and work

* Ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world

* Healthy, confident individuals ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society

Our new topic for this term is “We are at War”. This project will help us to gain an understanding of the reasons for war, the impact on the everyday lives of people including children and about significant individuals of the period. We will be given the opportunity to travel back in time with a visit to Cardiff Castle and a tour of the air raid shelters that we used there!

Within our literacy sessions we will be studying the novel “The Boy in the striped pyjamas” learning all about the lives of children during WW2. We will be comparing and contrasting characters, developing our spelling and grammar skills and creating stories, reports and diaries.

Our maths this term will be exploring (very) large numbers, using common factors to simplify fractions, reflecting and translating shapes, as well as converting units of measure and of course practising our 4 orders of operations.

In our RE lessons we will be focusing upon the second story of creation. We will be exploring a variety of Biblical texts and developing our relationship with God using the virtues Faith filled and Hopeful and our first class mass with be celebrated on Thursday September 17^th  and all are very welcome.

We will continue to develop our Welsh language in preparation for High School and build upon our ICT skills using google classroom and a range of apps and resources. There are also a lot of things that you can do with your grown-ups at home that we will regularly post on our streams. This term's first project is to design and create your very own air raid shelter to support our World War 2 topic. We can’t wait to see your creations! We will also be hosting a quiz afternoon where you can join with others to win the ultimate prize.

We will also continue to focus upon our 4 different ways of learning and using our characters Ambitious Aaron, Creative Chloe, Healthy Harri and Ethical Ella to help us in all that we do.
