Year 5 - H Samuel

Welcome to Year 5!

It’s the start of a new school year and we are excited to welcome everyone.   We have lots of exciting learning, activities and challenges ahead, and we hope every child will enjoy, thrive and achieve their very best.

Our Topic: We Are at War

This term, we will be learning about World War II through our topic We Are at War. We will find out:

Why wars happen

How World War II affected people's daily lives

What life was like for children during the war

Important people who helped during this time

As part of our learning, we will visit Cardiff Castle, where we will explore the air raid shelters and discover what life was like during wartime.

Literacy

In literacy lessons, we will read and study The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Through this novel, we will learn about the experiences of children during World War II.

We will:

Compare different characters

Improve our spelling and grammar skills

Write stories, diary entries and reports

Develop our reading and discussion skills

We are looking forward to a fantastic term of learning and adventure in Year 5!

In Mathematics this term, we will be developing our understanding of number, fractions, properties of shape and converting units of measure, while continuing to practise the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Through our We Are at War topic, we will also use real-life wartime contexts to solve problems involving money and budgeting, exploring the cost of food, supplies and equipment during World War II. These activities will help us strengthen our reasoning, problem-solving and mathematical thinking skills.

Religious Education (RE)

This term, in RE, we will be studying Creation and Covenant through Branch 1: We will learn how God created the world and made special promises, known as covenants, with His people. We will explore the stories of Noah, Abraham and Moses, discovering how each responded to God's call and how God remained faithful to His promises. We will learn about Moses and the Burning Bush, how God chose him to lead His people to freedom, and how Moses received the Ten Commandments to help guide God's people in living good and holy lives. We will also discover that Jesus did not set aside the Commandments but taught us how to live them through love, kindness, forgiveness and care for others. Through Scripture, prayer and reflection, we will consider how we can follow God's example and show His love in our daily lives. We will also have opportunities to plan and lead Collective Worship in school, helping us to grow in confidence and faith, and we will prepare for and take part in Mass, deepening our understanding of prayer, worship and our relationship with God.

Our first class Mass will be on Thursday September 24th and all are very welcome.

We will continue to develop our Welsh language skills and build confidence in speaking, reading and writing Welsh. We will also strengthen our digital skills by using Google Classroom and a range of ICT apps and resources to support our learning. Regular activities and challenges will be shared on our classroom stream so that children can continue their learning at home with their families.

To support our World War II topic, our first home project will be to design and create an air raid shelter. We are looking forward to seeing all of your fantastic ideas and creations! Later in the term, we will also host a quiz afternoon, where pupils can work together, test their knowledge and compete for a special prize.
