Year 5/6 - R Jones
Welcome back to the start of a new school year!
I hope you all had a fantastic summer and are feeling refreshed and ready for the exciting learning ahead in Year 5/6.
This term, we’re diving into a fascinating new topic: "Mythical Monsters."
Through this science-based project, we’ll explore the origins and characteristics of imaginary creatures from cultures around the world. We'll investigate the life cycles, habitats, body parts, and functions of real animals—both local and exotic—that may have inspired legendary beasts like dragons, unicorns, and sea monsters.
As part of our study, we’ll be collecting and presenting scientific and mathematical data, helping us build a deeper understanding of both zoology and mythology. And to top it all off, you’ll have the chance to take part in our Beast Creation Competition, where you’ll invent your very own mythical creature!
Get ready for a term full of creativity, curiosity, and discovery!
In literacy, we’ll be diving into a range of exciting and engaging books. Through these texts, you’ll explore and practise writing in a variety of genres—including persuasive pieces, letters, diaries, instructions, reports, and poetry—developing your skills as confident and creative writers.
In mathematics we will be looking at number and place value, addition and subtraction and properties of shape. Please learn and practise your times tables. Don’t forget to keep checking your “Mymaths” page for extra help and to complete all tasks set.
Our RE topic this term is called “Creation and Covenant”. We will be learning all about the story of Moses and the burning bush and the covenant that God made with his people through the Ten Commandments.
This term, our focus is on nurturing the virtues of eloquence and truthfulness. Our aim to encourage everyone to express themselves clearly and honestly in their self-perception, interactions with others, and understanding of the world around them, also embedding our Catholic Social teachings into our every day lives
In addition to this, we will continue to enhance our Welsh language and ICT skills. We will make use of Google Classroom along with various apps and resources to support our learning journey.
Music remains a key part of our curriculum, and we will continue to enjoy learning to play the ukulele. We are also looking forward to participating in a variety of hands-on experiences offered by school trips and visitors to our classroom. We will also be continuing to enjoy our edible garden activities, reading in our school library and preparing ourselves for the next stage of our learning journey.
Homework
Math homework will be put online on a Friday and is linked to the work that the children have been doing in class. Your child has their own individual ‘MyMaths’ login password.
New Bug Club books will be issued every Monday and please can you read with your parents every day.
P.E
P.E. will be undertaken on Monday and you will need to bring your kit in a clearly labelled bag to be kept in school until half term when it will be given back to you to wash.
Note to parents: Please ensure all of your child’s jumpers, cardigans and any coats have their names in. We will do our best to ensure they are found when lost, but it becomes difficult if the children’s names are not written inside.
We look forward to a fun and exciting year and not forgetting lots of hard work!!!!!
