Year 4 - N Sheehan

Croeso Pawb!

Welcome to Year 4! We hope you’ve had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to the year ahead – we certainly are! We have so many wonderful learning opportunities planned for you and lots of visits, visitors and celebrations to look forward to.

We can’t wait to help you learn and grow throughout the year and hope you continue to be the best you can be. Here’s to a wonderful year.

Mr Sheehan & Mrs McGivern 😊

This year we will be continuing to develop the four purposes of the new curriculum for Wales:

* Ambitious, capable learners ready to learn throughout their lives

* Enterprising, creative contributors ready to play a full part in life and work

* Ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world

* Healthy, confident individuals ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society

Our new topic for the new year is called “Vile Victorians” and throughout this term we will be travelling back in time to explore the life for children in Victorian times; schools, workhouses, and inventions; famous figures like Queen Victoria and Thomas Edison; Victorian fashion, food, and hygiene (or lack of it!). We’ll be doing this by creating timelines, role-playing, and even designing our own Victorian inventions!

This term, we’ll be diving into the gripping Victorian novel ‘Street Child’. Through the story of Jim Jarvis, we’ll explore character development and empathy; Victorian London and historical context; Writing diary entries, letters, and persuasive texts and expanding our vocabulary and comprehension skills. We’ll also be linking our reading to our Thematic topic, “Vile Victorians,” to deepen our understanding of life in the 19th century.

In Maths, we’ll be developing our skills in place value and number operations; mental and written strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; problem-solving and reasoning; times tables fluency and measurement later in the term

We’ll use practical activities, games, and challenges to make learning fun and meaningful.

Our RE topic this term is Creation and Covenant. We’ll be exploring the story of Creation in the Bible; what it means to be stewards of the Earth and the concept of promises in religious life. We’ll reflect through discussion, art, and writing, and consider how these themes apply to our everyday lives.

This term, we are focusing on the virtues of being eloquent and truthful. These virtues help us grow not only as learners but as kind and respectful individuals.

  • Eloquent: We will practise expressing ourselves clearly and confidently in speech and writing, especially during Literacy and RE discussions.
  • Truthful: We will learn the importance of honesty in our words and actions, and how being truthful builds trust and strengthens our classroom community.

These virtues will be woven into our daily learning and celebrated in our classroom environment.
