Ysgol Gynradd St John Lloyd RC Primary School

To be the best we can be, living to learn, learning to live with God at our side.

Welcome

Year 1

Welcome back everyone! We hope you all had a great half term break and are looking forward to some more exciting times in year 1.

Our topic this term is ‘Remember Remember’ and we will be looking at the story of the Gunpowder Plot and the key significant individuals and places such as Guy Fawkes, King James and the Houses of Parliament.  The children will also be learning about ‘The Great Fire of London’ and understand why the fire grew so big and burned for so long and understand some of the measures taken to stop it spreading.

We will also be visiting the local fire station to talk about the dangers of fire and how to keep safe.  The children will be very busy preparing questions to ask the fireman about their job.  The children will be very creative using a range of fabric materials to explore colour and texture.  They will use and develop techniques such as stitching, bonding, joining, cutting and felt making to create abstract textile patches on the theme of fire.  How exciting!

Our R.E. topic is waiting; the children will be learning that Advent is a time of waiting in Joyful hope for Jesus.  They will understand that Advent is a time of waiting to celebrate Jesus’ birthday.

Homework

Maths homework will be given out on Fridays and will be linked to the work that you have been doing in class this week. This needs to be returned by the following Friday.

New bug club books will be issued every Monday. Please read them every day.

PE

PE is on a Thursday. Please also ensure your child is prepared each week with navy blue or black shorts and a white top in a clearly labelled kit bag.

Note to parents:
Please ensure all of your child's jumpers, cardigans and any coats have their names in. We will do our best to ensure they are found when lost, but it becomes difficult if the children's names are not written inside. Diolch.

Croeso I flwydden un!  Welcome to year 1!

Welcome back everyone!  We hope you have all had a wonderful summer and are all looking forward to some exciting times in year 1.

Our first topic this term is ‘Happiness’ we will be interviewing other children and staff in the school to find out what makes them happy.  Soon we will be having fun in the local park, playing games and telling jokes.  So try and think of a joke to make us all laugh.  We will be learning that being healthy is a big factor in being happy.  We will also be learning the names of the different parts of the body and find out how to look after ourselves through exercise and healthy living.

Our R.E. topic is families and we will be looking at love and care shown in the family and that everyone belongs to the family of God.  Please bring in a family photograph for our class display.
